The Baden Academy Future Engineers club will be preparing to take part in the next Future Engineers competition. We will learn about Computer Animated Design (CAD) software using the online software TinkerCAD. The club is limited to 18 students in grades 3-6.
We enter the competitions at the Future Engineers website. In the past we have learned about the International Space Station and their 3D printers. We solved problems the astronauts are facing by designing an object that can be printed on the space station. This year we are entering the Name the Rover contest for the new Mars Rover and 3D Challenge.
We work with e-NABLE the Future to print prosthetic hands for children in need. e-NABLE is an online global community of “Digital Humanitarian” volunteers from all over the world who are using their 3D printers to make free and low-cost prosthetic upper limb devices for children and adults in need.
We have been busy this year printing room signs for all the Baden Academy teachers. The project has required some amazing project management as teams go out to gather what the teachers want on their signs, others build per prescribed dimensions in Tinkercad, work to trasform the STL files into sliced G-Codes for the Printer, and work hard to remind Dr. Ellen and Mr. Jake to hit print before leaving the lab.
But the part the kids like the most seems to be troubleshooting the problems with the 3D printers. Clogged nozzles and failed prints invite discussion and discovery as we tweak designs to better use the Ulti-Maker Plus machines in the lab!
